Luna Belle’s Bloomfield Hills Graduation Party for Sophia
By Luna Belle
Every event teaches me something new. Sometimes it’s a new cocktail recipe. Sometimes it’s a lesson about weather, logistics, or how many cherries people can consume in a single evening. And sometimes it’s a reminder that all it takes is one person discovering you to open doors you never expected. My latest graduation party in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan was one of those events.
Not only was it a beautiful celebration for an amazing graduate named Sophia, but it also marked a few important firsts for me and the Derby Bar team. It was my first weekday evening event. And it was my first event booked through a professional event planner. Needless to say, I was excited. And maybe just a little nervous.
The story actually began months earlier when Kelli Robinson of Social Light Detroit discovered me on Instagram. Like many people, Kelli first met me through photos. No event. No in-person tour. Just pictures.
Thankfully, she liked what she saw. Actually, “liked” might be underselling it. She fell in love with my design. My vintage horse trailer charm. My Kentucky-inspired details.
Soon, she was sharing photos of me with the host family as she planned Sophia’s graduation celebration.
She called me back and said family loved what they saw! And before anyone had ever met me in person, I was officially invited to the party!
Talk about pressure. It’s one thing when someone books you after seeing you at another wedding or graduation party. It’s another thing entirely when they’re trusting photos and reviews. Fortunately, I was determined not to disappoint. When the day arrived, the weather cooperated beautifully. The evening sun created that perfect golden glow that photographers love and guests barely notice until they see the pictures later.
The property looked incredible. Every detail had been thoughtfully planned. The decorations were elegant. The atmosphere was relaxed. And the entire event felt polished without feeling formal. Exactly the kind of celebration I love being part of.
One of the things that immediately stood out was how much thought Kelli had put into every detail. This wasn’t just another graduation party. This was a fully customized experience built around Sophia’s next chapter at Boston College.
In fact, Kelli even had a custom event logo designed specifically for the celebration. The logo appeared on the drink cups we served all evening, creating a personalized touch that guests absolutely loved. It might seem like a small detail, but those are the things people remember.
Everywhere you looked, there were thoughtful elements that tied the party together. I have to give Kelli credit—she truly knows how to go the extra mile for her clients. I loved being part of it.
Another first for me? The drink menu.
This event featured four signature cocktails, the most signature drinks I’ve ever served at a single event.
Normally my signature cocktails are:
Mint Julep
Luna Belle’s Kick
Southern Belle ’Rita
Petals & Prosecco
But Kelli had another creative idea. Instead of using my standard names, she completely reimagined the cocktail names to fit Sophia’s Boston College theme.
The Mint Julep became The Last Ferry Home. Luna Belle’s Kick transformed into Harbor Breeze Mule. The Southern Belle ’Rita became Summer on the Cape. And Petals & Prosecco was renamed Harbor House Spritz. The names were charming, clever, and perfectly fit the coastal New England vibe.
Of course, there was one small challenge. The bartenders had spent a year serving the drink names we created. Now they had to learn four entirely new ones, and remember which garnish belonged to which cocktail. Let’s just say there were a few moments early in the evening where everyone looked at each other and asked,
“Wait… which one is Summer on the Cape again?”
Thankfully, they got the hang of it quickly and by the end of the night, the new names were rolling off everyone’s tongues like they’d been serving them for years.
One of my favorite parts of the evening was welcoming a new member of the Derby Bar team. This was Spencer’s first event bartending with me. The nerves. The learning curve. The moment when three guests walk up at exactly the same time and all want something different.
Spencer handled it all with a smile. Sure, she was a little raw around the edges. Every great bartender starts somewhere. What she lacked in experience, she made up for with enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.
Anna had created custom name tags for the team this season, and Spencer immediately picked the name “Lucky.” The name fit perfectly. And as the evening went on, Lucky got better and better. Especially when it came to opening wine bottles. Let’s just say the first few required some teamwork. By the end of the night, she was opening them like she’d been doing it for years. Watching people gain confidence during an event makes my heart full. Almost as much as watching guests enjoy the drinks.
And enjoy them they did. All four signature cocktails were a hit. The Last Ferry Home (formerly my Mint Julep) packed its usual Kentucky punch and quickly became a favorite among guests who appreciated a stronger cocktail. The Harbor Breeze Mule earned compliments all evening, especially for the peach note that makes the drink uniquely Derby Bar. Summer on the Cape delivered refreshing citrus flavors that had guests returning for second rounds, and Harbor House Spritz offered a light, bubbly option that was perfect for a warm summer evening.
By the end of the event, there wasn’t much left of any of the signature cocktails. As every event professional knows, that’s usually a sign of perfect planning. Enough for everyone to enjoy, but not so much that you’re hauling leftovers home.
The drinks weren’t the only attraction. Another hit of the evening turned out to be Luna’s Lounge. What started as my comfortable seating area quickly became one of the most popular gathering spots for the party.
Guests relaxed on the couch. Friends caught up in the lounge chair. New conversations started, old friendships continued, and people lingered.
That’s always a good sign! As the evening progressed, something else happened (which is now becoming a reoccurrence at these events). As sunset approached, guests naturally gravitated toward me.
The high-top tables filled up. My lounge stayed occupied, and by the end of the evening, it seemed like everyone had gathered around me. Laughing, talking, sharing stories, making memories.
That’s one of my favorite things about being a mobile bar trailer for parties.
I don’t just serve drinks, I create a destination. A place where people naturally gather and where conversations happen. A place where celebrations come people connect in real life and not just through a screen.
The feedback throughout the evening was incredible. Guests stopped by to compliment my design, ask questions about upcoming events, and learn more about the Derby Bar experience. In fact, nearly ten guests took business cards home, and at least five of them already had specific events in mind.T hat’s always exciting. Not because it means future bookings but because it means people connected with what we do.
The most meaningful feedback, however, came from Sophia’s mom. She told us how happy she was that we had become part of the celebration and how much we added to the overall atmosphere.
How special the experience felt. Those moments never get old for me. She understood what I’m really all about. Not cocktails. Not beer. Not mocktails. We’re selling experiences.
We’re creating gathering spaces. We’re helping hosts enjoy their own parties instead of worrying about if the drinks or ice is going to run out. When someone recognizes that value, it means everything to me.
As we packed up at the end of the night, I couldn’t help but smile. My first weekday event. My first event planner booking. My largest signature cocktail menu.A talented event planner who customized every detail. A new bartender finding her confidence. A lounge full of happy guests, and a graduate whose celebration felt truly special.
Not bad for a weeknight.
Until the next celebration,
