Bigger in Texas, Beautiful in Traverse City

Luna Belle’s Northern Michigan Wedding Adventure

By Luna Belle

Every now and then, a girl needs a road trip.

This past weekend, I traded my usual Southeast Michigan stomping grounds for the rolling hills, wineries, and shoreline views of Traverse City, Michigan, where I was headed to serve at a beautiful private wedding. Not just any wedding, either—this one came with a guest list full of Texans. And as I would soon learn, they don’t mess around when it comes to celebrations.

The adventure began with a four-hour drive north. Honestly, the trip was wonderful. The weather was perfect, traffic was light, and the entire Derby Bar team was enjoying the ride. The farther north we traveled, the more the scenery changed. Open highways gave way to winding roads, towering pines, and glimpses of sparkling blue water. I was feeling pretty good about myself.

Then we stopped for gas. That’s when things got interesting.

As Ray walked around to do his usual inspection, he noticed something that immediately stopped everyone in their tracks.

My electrical cord was gone. Well… mostly gone.

Apparently, it had somehow worked its way loose and had been dragging on the road for who knows how long. All that remained was a sad, frayed end of wire. Not exactly ideal.

Without electricity, I can’t power my refrigeration, lighting, and equipment. A mobile bar without power is a bit like a horse without legs—technically still a horse, but not very useful.

For a moment, everyone stared at the damage. Then my paddock manager, Brad, sprang into action.

One thing about Brad: he takes good care of me. Within minutes he had a plan. A quick stop at Home Depot, a replacement plug, a few tools, and some skilled handiwork later, I was back in business.

The total repair bill? $3.99. The value of the repair? Absolutely priceless.

It’s funny how some of the most important fixes are also the least expensive. With my electrical system patched up and ready to go, we continued north toward Traverse City.

This wedding was unique because I arrived a full day early. Normally, the Derby Bar team doesn’t deliver me that far in advance, but after a four-hour drive and working in a location we weren’t familiar with, everyone agreed it was smart to give ourselves some extra time.

I’m glad we did.

The venue was a stunning private residence nestled on a beautiful piece of Northern Michigan property. The kind of place that makes you stop and look around for a minute. The tent was gorgeous. The landscaping was immaculate. The setup was elegant without feeling overdone. And best of all, I was parked right next to the dance floor.

Now, let’s be clear. The bride was obviously the star of the show. But after her?I was definitely getting my fair share of attention.

Guests couldn’t stop walking over to check me out, ask questions, and snap photos. That’s one of my favorite parts of being a mobile wedding bar—I don’t just serve drinks, I become part of the experience.

When wedding started, the team split up. The ladies took advantage of being in Traverse City and spent time exploring the area, visiting the beach, and enjoying a night on the town.

Meanwhile, Ray and Brad stayed with me and worked the event. The two of them spent the evening pouring drinks, chatting with guests, and making new friends. That’s one of the things I love most about weddings—by the end of the night, complete strangers often feel like new friends.

This wedding’s drink menu was particularly memorable. Usually, the signature cocktails contain spirits. Not this time. The couple chose two signature mocktails, both inspired by the hit Broadway musical Wicked.

There was the bright green Elphie Mocktail and the perfectly pink Glinda Mocktail.

They were colorful, creative, and an absolute hit with guests. And if I’m being honest, I’ve always had a soft spot for Broadway. The mocktails fit the vibe perfectly.

Earlier that day, when the team picked up the alcohol order for the wedding, there was a brief moment of panic. Everyone looked at the inventory and thought: “There’s no way this is right.”

Cases everywhere. Stacks of beverages. 2 full kegs. Enough product to stock a small convenience store.

Surely there had been a mistake.

Nope.

Turns out the guest list was largely from Texas. And those Texans showed us exactly what they were capable of.

By the end of the evening, the beverage consumption was downright impressive. Let’s just say they definitely lived up to the saying: Everything is bigger in Texas.

One unique challenge at this wedding was power. Because I was set up so far out in the yard, traditional electrical hookups weren’t an option. Instead, I operated entirely on generator power. Thankfully, the Derby Bar team knows how to make sure service never skips a beat. Everything ran smoothly, guests never noticed a thing, and the drinks kept flowing all night long.

When the wedding ended, my work wasn’t quite over. Instead of heading straight home, I returned to the cabin where the team was staying.

That night, I sat quietly beneath the stars of a Northern Michigan sky. No city lights. No traffic. Just cool air, distant crickets, and more stars than I could count.

It was the perfect way to end a wonderful wedding.

But the adventure still had one more day left. Before heading home, I got to visit Providence Organic Farm & Cafe, a beautiful farm overlooking Torch Lake, one of Michigan’s most stunning destinations. Then it was off to brunch at Short’s Brewing Company, followed by some time near the shores of Lake Michigan.

This trip is why I love what I do.

It’s not just about serving drinks at weddings. It’s about the journey. It’s about the people. It’s about creating unforgettable experiences in beautiful places.

And sometimes, it’s about discovering that a $3.99 repair can save an entire wedding weekend.

Until the next adventure,
