The Host Who Remembered Luna Belle

There are some events that feel a little more special than others. Not necessarily because they're bigger or because they're fancier. Not even because the cocktails disappear faster than expected. Sometimes an event is special simply because it reminds you how far you've come. My latest Walled Lake, Michigan graduation party was one of those events.

You see, the host wasn't a stranger to me. She was actually there at my very first paid event when The Derby Bar was just getting started. Remember Gavin? Back then, I was still the new girl on the block. The team was figuring things out, learning what worked, discovering what guests loved, and generally trying to convince everyone that a vintage horse trailer could become something pretty special.

Apparently, I made an impression. Fast-forward a year, and a guest at that party remembered me when it was time to celebrate her son's graduation. Well she remembered Luna Belle. She remembered the experience, and she decided she wanted me for her family milestone. Now that's the kind of repeat business that makes a girl feel pretty darn good.

Getting Luna Into the Backyard... By Any Means Necessary

I've been in some tight spots. I've squeezed through gates. I've navigated narrow driveways. I've been maneuvered around landscaping, buildings, fences, and just about every obstacle you can imagine.

But this Walled Lake graduation party gave me a new first. I had to go over landscaping to get into the backyard.

Yep.

There was no magical driveway entrance that would put me exactly where the host wanted me, and when a client has a vision for where they want their mobile bar trailer positioned, we do our best to make that vision happen. Sometimes that means getting creative. Sometimes it means very carefully driving where you're probably thinking, "Are they really going to put that trailer through there?"

The answer was yes. When the job was finished, I was exactly where I needed to be. And that's what matters. I'm there to become part of the event, and I need to be convenient for the guests.

Another Graduation Party, Another Pool

I have officially decided that graduation parties with swimming pools are some of the most fun events around. There is just something about a beautiful summer day, a backyard full of friends and family, and a pool full of happy kids that makes everything feel like a vacation.

The day was perfect too. The weather was warm without being unbearable, the sun was shining, and the pool was getting plenty of use. Guests could swim, relax, grab a cocktail, catch up with friends, and enjoy the celebration without having to worry about a thing. Meanwhile, I was parked nearby doing what I do best, serving drinks, creating a gathering place, and looking fabulous while doing it.

Naturally, the host selected one of my personal favorites for the cocktail menu: The Parlor'd Old Fashioned. This is one of those cocktails that feels like it was practically designed for me. It also happens to be one of The Derby Bar team's favorites, and the neighborhood agreed. The drinks were flowing steadily throughout the party, and guests had plenty of good things to say about the cocktails and the overall experience.

Business Cards Were Flying

Literally. And figuratively. The guests at this party were an incredibly fun bunch, and I spent a good portion of the afternoon and evening answering questions about what I do.

"How much do you charge?"

"Do you do weddings?"

"Can you come to our neighborhood party?"

"How far do you travel?"

"Can we get you for our graduation party?"

Those are some of my favorite questions. Before long, business cards were making their way into guests' hands. Quite a few people were already talking about events they had coming up and how much they'd love to have me there.

That's one of the coolest parts of doing mobile bar service in Metro Detroit. One event can lead to another. A guest sees me at a friend's graduation party. They fall in love with the experience. Then twelve months later, I'm rolling into their backyard. (i.e. this event)

That's how The Derby Bar grows. One celebration at a time.

Ray Takes on the Whole Show

There was one other interesting twist to this event. For this party, Ray worked completely solo. Brad and Audrey were out of town enjoying some well-earned family vacation time, so Ray stepped up and handled the entire operation himself.

And when I say the entire operation, I mean everything. Ray picked up the drinks. He prepped the cocktails. He chilled the beverages. He loaded and transported me. He set me up. He handled service. He kept everything stocked. He cleaned up. He packed me back up. And then he drove me home. All by himself. That was a lot to say… not to mention do!

That's a lot of work for one person, especially when you're responsible for making sure the beverage service runs smoothly throughout an entire graduation party. But Ray handled it. He kept drinks flowing, kept guests happy, and made sure the party never missed a beat. I'm pretty sure he was ready for a nap by the time we got home. He earned it.

More Than a Bar

This event was another reminder of something I have learned over the past year. People don't hire The Derby Bar simply because they need someone to pour drinks. There are plenty of ways to get drinks at a party. What they hire us for is the experience.

They hire me because I create a destination - A place where guests naturally gather. A place that looks beautiful in photographs and becomes part of the décor. A place where conversations start and where people can relax and enjoy the celebration. And hopefully, a place that people remember.

That's why hearing from this host meant so much. She had experienced me at that very first paid event. She saw what I could bring to a celebration and when her son's graduation came around, she remembered.

She didn't just remember a bar. She remembered the experience. And that's exactly what we hope every client takes away from an event with me.

A Full-Circle Kind of Night

As the sun started to go down over Walled Lake, the pool was still busy, the Parlor'd Old Fashioneds had made their mark, and conversations about future parties were still happening around me.

I looked around and thought about that very first paid event. Back then, nobody knew exactly what The Derby Bar would become. We had Luna Belle. We had a dream. And we had a whole lot to learn.

Now, I'm traveling throughout Walled Lake, Novi, Northville, Bloomfield Hills, and the rest ofMetro Detroit, showing up at weddings, graduation parties, corporate events, neighborhood celebrations, and private parties. And every once in a while, I get to come full circle.

That is something I don't take for granted. So thank you to our wonderful host for remembering me. Thank you for trusting me with your son’s graduation celebration.

And thank you to the entire Walled Lake neighborhood for making me feel so welcome.
