Blue Lagoons & Big Blue Dreams: Luna Belle Celebrates a Kentucky Wildcat
Luna Belle’s Novi Graduation Party
By Luna Belle
Every graduation party has its own personality. Some are elegant, some are loud, some are filled with backyard games, and others revolve around the swimming pool. But every once in a while, I get invited to a party where everything just… fits. That was exactly the case at my latest graduation party in Novi, Michigan.
This celebration was for Sofia, an incredible graduate preparing for her next adventure at the University of Kentucky. Naturally, she wanted her party to have a little Kentucky flair. Now you’re speaking my language. After all, I’m Luna Belle. Kentucky is practically in my DNA. The horse culture, the Southern hospitality, the Mint Juleps, the Derby traditions. It felt like we were meant to celebrate together.
The signature cocktail menu reflected that theme perfectly too. Naturally, my famous Derby Mint Julep made the menu. It simply wouldn’t feel right sending someone off to the University of Kentucky without one. But the real crowd-pleaser was a brand-new creation inspired by the Wildcats’ signature color. The Blue Lagoon. Bright blue in color, refreshing - summer in a glass.
Even better, we served it two ways. Guests looking for a refreshing non-alcoholic drink enjoyed the mocktail version, while those wanting to kick the celebration up a notch ordered the Two James vodka version.
The adults certainly weren’t shy about choosing that option either. Seeing kids carrying bright blue mocktails while parents enjoyed the cocktail version made for a fun moment throughout the evening. It was one of my favorite themed drink menus of the season.
Of course… Before anyone could enjoy a Blue Lagoon, I first had to get into position, and that turned out to be a bit of a puzzle. Every event has different logistics. Some have narrow gates. Some have soft grass. Some have steep driveways. This home had a driveway layout that made positioning me exactly where we wanted… interesting.
My service window needed to face the party of course. Simple enough. Except there wasn’t enough room to simply turn me around. Normally that would mean unhooking me, manually rotating me, and doing a whole lot of pushing. Trust me, nobody wanted that.
Fortunately, Ray had another idea. Instead of bringing the usual truck, he had driven his sporty SUV. That decision ended up saving the day. Using a narrow strip of landscaping between the neighboring homes, Ray carefully eased the SUV off the edge of the driveway, slipped through a row of bushes, and maneuvered me into the perfect position.
I’ll admit… Even I was impressed. It took patience. Precision. And just a little courage. The best part? At the end of the evening, Ray backed me out just as smoothly. Guests actually stopped what they were doing to watch. When he finished the maneuver without moving a single table, clipping a single branch, or asking anyone to move, the crowd gave him a round of applause. I think he tried to act humble. But I know he enjoyed every second of it.
Once I was parked, everything else seemed to fall perfectly into place. Literally. This event marked the debut of one of my newest upgrades—a custom soda can dispenser. Now, I know that might not sound very exciting, but have you ever slid something into place and realized it fit so perfectly it looked like it had always belonged there?
That’s exactly what happened here. The dispenser nestled into one of my storage cabinets as though it had been designed specifically for that spot. No wasted space. No awkward adjustments or gaps. Just… Perfect.
Those little victories make me happier than you might think. Sometimes it’s the smallest improvements that make serving hundreds of drinks just a little smoother.
Speaking of smooth… This event might have been the most drama-free party I’ve ever worked. No blown keg lines. No electrical problems. No emergency repairs. No surprise trips to the hardware store. Even the printed beverage menu fit perfectly inside its frame. After some of my recent adventures, that almost felt suspicious.
Everything simply… Worked.
I could get used to that.
The weather certainly helped. Friday evening couldn’t have been more beautiful. Warm enough for guests to enjoy the pool. Cool enough that nobody was melting in the summer heat. Clear skies. Comfortable temperatures. Just enough sunshine to make every photo glow. I spent the evening parked beside a beautiful balloon arch that served as the perfect backdrop for photos with Sofia.
Before long, I realized I had accidentally become part of the photo station. Guests weren’t just taking pictures with the graduate they were taking selfies with me too. I’ll never complain about that.
In fact… There were so many people stopping by to admire my vintage design that I started feeling a little guilty for the food truck! The food looked incredible though.
But more than one guest told us they had spent more time hanging around me than anywhere else. I suppose that’s one of the unexpected things about being a luxury mobile bar trailer.
People don’t simply walk up, grab a drink, and leave. They stay. They talk. They laugh. They meet people. They linger. Somehow I become more than a place to order cocktails. I become part of the party itself.
One thing I especially noticed during this graduation party was the pace. Unlike weddings, where dozens of guests often rush the bar all at once during cocktail hour, this crowd flowed naturally throughout the evening. There were no long drink lines. No overwhelming rushes.Just a steady stream of smiling guests. That rhythm allowed Ray to do what he does best. He kept drinks flowing continuously all evening while still taking time to chat with guests, answer questions, and make everyone feel welcome.
That’s one of the things that separates great bartenders from good ones. Anyone can pour a drink, not everyone can make guests feel like friends.
Before long, the sun began to set. The Blue Lagoons had nearly disappeared. The Mint Juleps had found plenty of happy bellies. Guests were still swimming.
Friends were gathered around the me, the balloon arch was still busy with photo, and I couldn’t help but smile. Some events are memorable because something goes wrong and the team saves the day. Others are memorable because…
Nothing goes wrong at all. Everything simply works exactly the way you hoped it would. Those nights are rare. They’re peaceful. And they’re a reminder that all the preparation, maintenance, planning, and practice really do pay off.
Congratulations, Sofia. I have a feeling the University of Kentucky is getting someone pretty special.
Until the next celebration,
